My awareness
of God began as an 8-year-old kid in
Columbus, Ohio, who already felt a serious need for help. The family
was not "functioning", and a neighbor said I should "try God". At that
moment all I really wanted was to hear from my dad, who was "gone."
I was never told where Dad went during these months-long
episodes. But gone he was. And to this little boy the only thing
important was to find him. I knelt in a wooded area on the way home
from school one night and simply prayed, "God, if you're really there,
I want to hear from my dad TONIGHT!"
